i was once asked how i make markings look Not-Painted-On and fluffy and honestly the process is very simple;

1) paint the markings on a new layer
2) grab the smudge/smear brush
3) stroke against fur growth direction
4) stroke WITH fur growth direction
5) merge layers (:

It also originally was very warm but direction was to put a clear cut of warm character with cold background for the read so it was adjusted.

Setting aside the animation direction,
the only thing Engage could do to get closer to the original beyond what they already have is to use a high contrast filter and desaturate the blue tones

If they did that I think it would be near indistinguishable.
