I think people often forget that Madeleine’s obsession with cooking isn’t ambition
It’s because it’s the only good/worthwhile aspect of herself she sees, and is the only thing she thinks she can offer Sherry
Like, Madeleine HATES herself at this point in the story #GHliveblog
I love getting to show silly moments in Madeleine and Sherry’s relationship!!
It’s all quite heavy for the majority of the arc, but I wanted to get peeks of what it’s like when the conflicts are resolved #GHliveblog
Just like it was important for Lucy to befriend Clementine and Meyer as people totally separate from her past trauma,
It was important for Graham to also befriend Lucy and Frank for the same reason! #GHliveblog
Idk if anyone caught on, but Madeleine, Graham, and Lucy all wanted to watch the same tofu documentary lol
I love tofu, I’d love to write a story about a tofu maker... or is that too in my wheelhouse now, after GH.... #GHliveblog
I wish I’d spent more time on Yuzu and Anise’s friendship (/romance?)
It’s mostly established through little things like how they were already friends in culinary school before they were hired with Meyer at Cosmos #GHliveblog
Not a lot happens in the Ube Halaya ep, I wanted to try an episode that was mostly a dialogue-free cooking sequence
Graham re-associating cooking with Lucy enjoying his food rather than the fallout at Dimanche is nice, though! #GHliveblog
I think a lot about how this is Madeleine and Lucy’s second and last interaction with each other
People remark on how Lucy helped all the Dimanche chefs she met, but I made the decision that there had to be at least one she didn’t!
For Madeleine, Graham helps her #GHliveblog
Obviously that doesn’t excuse her behavior, but I hoped that readers could somewhat relate to how the absence of external support and constantly having people assume the worst in you hurts
Like yeah, she’s still at fault, but you understand

Heath trying really hard to rebuild his relationship with Brie and Madeleine constantly getting in the way was my favorite bit in this arc
Someone please help Heath make friends

Looking at his ex-girlfriend and current one—Graham has A Type™️

Having characters together because they choose to, and not because the plot demands it isn’t always the most sound writing choice—but for the message of this story, I think Graham simply affirming that change won’t ruin Lucy’s life is important #GHliveblog
It’s finally time for Lucy to articulate her character conflict!!
Lucy leaving Gourmet Hound worried me a lot bc I’d have to figure out how maneuver the plot so they’d stay in contact—but it was important to Lucy’s character that she leave #GHliveblog
I’m not sure if ppl picked it up, but a lot of the time Graham expresses his care as “I want her life to be easier”
I’m not sure why I stuck with that phrase for him, but it feels right! #GHliveblog
Also it’s wild to me that people thought Graham would punch Jacobi when this is a canonical Graham story, he’s SOFT #GHliveblog
I also wanted to distance the story from the message “Bad things happen so we can learn from it”—sometimes bad things happen and it just sucks!! #GHliveblog
A lot of this arc is to complicate what happened at Dimanche—of course Graham was a victim, but Graham himself does not hold Madeleine solely accountable #GHliveblog
I wanted to give Yuzu at least one moment of insight and dignity—I try to do that for most of my comic relief characters (even Quincy got one)! #GHliveblog
Also I was reminded that I drew this in August 2018, which was riiight at the start of Bon Appetit breaking big
So I thought I was being subtle, but NOW IT’S VERY OBVIOUS #GHliveblog
Sherry is the most perceptive character, and has the distance to foresee the breakdown Lucy will have in the Bartlett arc #GHliveblog
