Victorians gave us the ritual of Xmas cards. Cheaper mass printing & stamps started the craze in the mid 19thc. Many assume their odd cards were based on morbidity, but scholars feel their idea of Xmas was also more secular, ironic & funny. The joke’s on us 😂

On this a theory for why the English like ghost stories at Christmas: This may be based on an old custom. In the 8thC St Bede wrote that Anglo-Saxons left food on tables overnight during the Xmas season so that visiting spirits could partake of the feast……
