A quick warmup gouache sketch turned into a thing inspired by Calvin and Hobbes as well as ’s “Tyrant and Holtz”. Oh the adventures they have! One tries to photograph warblers, the other dreams of warbler drumsticks.

Due to lockdown I haven't seen (or heard) a Sedge Warbler yet this spring. Nevertheless, here's a painting of one. Another A4 oil sketch for the 'Birds of Cork' book.

Sometimes bird ID is tricky even for the experts. Willow warblers and chiffchaffs look alike but sound different, whilst blackcaps and garden warblers look different but sound alike - one pair is hard to tell apart by sight, whilst the other is hard to tell apart by sound!

Yesterday I visited a wetland area a few minutes from home for a stroll, and I couldn’t believe how many warblers were out and about. One of the highlights was this Nashville warbler we found foraging in the willows near the river.
