I remembered the biggest example of torturing character for the sake of it, Code Lyoko, the kids in that show live in hell, they are always getting choked and shocked and in some episodes, THEY FREAKING DIE, AND THEN THE BY THE NEXT EPISODE THEY ACT LIKE NOTHING HAPPENED!
