The kanji itself represents a barrel, which makes it easy to associate with the 'use' meaning, since barrels are used for lots of things.

Remember, you have to 'use' kanji to remember them.

While this originally meant an animal paw, it's easier to think of this in terms of the radical 釆 (to divide) plus 田 (field) to number the sections of something.

To me, this looks more like the handle of a blade, but that makes it pretty easy to remember.

It originally meant 'knife' and the little hook on the upper left was the blade.
