i have a large scanner (epson GT-20000) so up to A3 i can scan the whole thing, if it's bigger i'll scan in pieces and use photoshop photomerge, which works scarily well

then spend lots of time locally adjusting levels and clone-tooling out dog hair

Realism! Sounds strange but I've shied away from it in the past as a digital artist since I'm worried people will assume I trace/photomanip rather than actually paint. But I love to do it, so I'm working on embracing it! 😆
