Fun fact, Merice does actually have irises+pupils, his eyes are just glowy+very light and blend in with the glow (not uncommon for Ancients)
It’s a little easier to tell this in darker lighting

Here's one of the final things I do on a large painting comm, I put it in B+W to check the values.

This helps me see if the characters are sufficiently in focus in terms of colour and lighting, as with a complex background you don't want the BG to end up as the main focus.
