I realllyyyy.... avoid drawing bgs lmao. I usually do lineless bgs/use a lot of shapes/use textures and keep my shadows pretty simple. Most of the time just from one light source. The lasso tool is what I use quite often.

I treat my bgs like their characters and render them the same same way. I try to make them lower contrast to male the characters pop.

Haven't tried a lot of hot pressed papers but didn't like the ones I've tried so far
They tend to have a more 'crisp' effect

2 years ago I had the good fortune to work on an amazing project, , as a background painter. For some BGs, I did just the block-in. It was a very collaborative effort from the whole amazing design team at Bardel.
