If you look at some of Rebecca's older work you can see a resemblance to the pilot artstyle. If I'm not mistaken, the style was changed because it was too hard for the other storyboarders to replicate it (and I'm also guessing the final style was a lot cheaper to animate)

2.) Try to focus on indistinct aspects of your inspiration, like posture, or the shape of their spine/head/limbs. Don't replicate large parts of the original animal's body completely.
This helps your design feel distinct.
