Frédéric Cuvier was born in 1773. These illustrations are from his 4 vol. 'Histoire naturelle des mammifères', 1824-42, written with Étienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. The animals were mainly depicted from life. Included is a red panda, Ailurus fulgens, which he named in 1825.
