In fact if you think about it. Carol’s been living that legacy since her Ms Marvel days. She’s half Kree. She was closer to Mar-vell than his own children! Like Steve said - his name wasn’t Captain Marvel- that’s a legacy and he wanted you to have it.
Sometime later, she helped Genis-Vell brainstorm new Super Hero names and came up with the alias of Pulsar. Genis-Vell then decided to change his name to Photon, which is… Monica’s old alias. How original, Genis!
And also she said herself she didn’t want to live by the shadows of other people (specially someone she didn’t know much of) and wanted to follow her path own path as Photon. She gave Captain Marvel to Genis-Vell very easily.
Until finally, in 2012 it got to the most famous Captain Marvel Carol Danvers, USAF Colonel and original Ms.Marvel, kree-human hybrid and someone very close to Mar-vell and so aware of the weight of the name. Carol SO MUCH deserved it as she’d lived its legacy since day one.
Immediately afterward was Mar-Vell’s son Genis-Vell, who became Captain Marvel in 1995. Genis then adopted the name "Photon" causes him to quarrel with Monica, who had also called herself "Photon". In the end, Genis is allowed to use "Photon" and Monica decides to go by "Pulsar"
When Monica adopted the Captain Marvel name in comics, she wasn’t aware of Mar-Vell, what he represented and Carol was in space. The people called her that and she proudly took it, later conceding the title to Genis-Vell, the son of the original Captain Marvel.
Mar-Vell has (currently) 3 children,
Genis-Vell and his sibling Ohlya-Vell, and their half brother, Teddy aka The King of Space Hulkling. I’m putting it to Comics Twitter, have these family of heroes ever met on page? And if so, where? I’d love read that.
