No not really usually the characters are changed more than just skin. Some of the hair styles and a few other things will be changed. Then usually when people who try and "fix" the black version of the character they just change the skintone as if thats the bad thing 😶

Both character's skintones, when they're at their darkest, arent THAT dark. Characters in Fairy Tail with darker skintones have a trend of being villains who don't get redeemed. Example set 1:

And there are MANY more examples of Gajeel's skin color being inconsistent like the above, but it's almost like he wants Gajeel to have a darker skintone, but he's too scared of one of his main heroes being black

The characters who are obviously supposed to have a darker skin tone than others have an inconsistent skintone. Gajeel always gets whitewashed. And then in the next drawing he has darker skin. And then in the game...he's pasty as hell. Overall though, it's pretty...light
