I use concave eyes 90% of the time! However i do deform them to appear less flat and paper like on alot of models. I then rig them in such a way that they still have the same sort of rotation as a sphere. Also leave good space for the eye socket!

Again, not much I can say about FLCL (thanks to overhyping in the anglo sphere). The epitome of weird Gainax. Fantastic style. Never needed sequels. A+ no notes (but then again I've not watched it in a LONG time)
