19th Century France. (I know the French Revolution finished in 1799, but what's one year?)
In a country gripped by civil war, can an aristocrat and a revolutionary really find a way to be together? Or is she in more danger than she could ever imagine?

🌋 “It is desirable for a painter, at least once in his life, to witness the Eruption of a Volcano.” —Pierre-Henri-Valenciennes, 1799
Early plein-air painters risked it all to practice their skills, including painting active volcanoes. See more examples in #PaintingTruetoNature.

Happy bday, John Lindley (born #OTD 1799)! Known as the “father of modern orchidology”, he was an important contributor to our knowledge of orchids. He collaborated with Austrian artist Franz Bauer to produce "Illustrations of Orchidaceous Plants" ➡️ https://t.co/wT9ROQpRDi
Illness struck the artist (1792-3) & left him deaf. It’s likely that the sense of isolation led to his dark & startling Caprichos (published in 1799). These were macabre images from his subconscious which continue to inhabit the viewer’s mind, once seen.
