I've been playtesting grappling rules in Bhakashal. My groups have discovered that grappling is an alternative to killing everything that opposes them. It's also something that makes "mobs" deadly, 0-level fighters are NBD until a group of them swarms you and drags you down...

One of the goals with Bhakashal is to patch up some of the long standing mechanical cracks in AD&D. One of those is thief skills. First, they are cruelly low to start, making them almost harmful to use, as they encourage thieves to try things that put them at great risk
