Roads in Pompeii that are accessible today were excavated in times when perhaps these subtle archaeological layers weren’t noticed & innocently cleared away; so much potential information lost. Great that Region V excavations are now analysing this evidence.

Object of the day: oyster shell with the cartouche of Senwosret I (Kherpkara). Two pierced holes show that it was worn as a pendant – but by whom? Ca. 50 are known, most without archaeological context.

What beautiful, delicate work!

17. Had they ever been? Archaeological finds show a well-populated landscape throughout the Anglo-Saxon period. The ‘loneliness of the wide wilderness’ seems after all to have described an internal, religious mentality rather than the actual landscape.

Very happy about how much field sketching I got to do visiting Ireland - it also taught me:

1) Architectural drawing is hard (ruins are better)
2) Stone and veg are hard too. Everything is hard
3) Me saying "I'll do a quick one" is always a lie
