'A Peasant Woman'~ Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas, (1871)
The Breton girl's white headdress is illuminated by the bright sunlight which pours in through a transparent white curtain. This painting also reveals Degas pre-occupation with countre-jour, modelling mass against light.

LRT I’m obsessed with paintings of what I call “a lover’s view in the morning after”: a naked back across the sheets, lit by the morning sun. If I have to pinpoint an origin for this fixation, it would probably be the time I saw Degas’ La Toilette in the Hermitage.
