There would be a lot of issues projecting textures onto a 6 sided cube. The MDL format didn't exactly have UV islands back then, textures were projected onto a model based on the location of seams. You can see it in the dog texture. The pickups are instead externally loaded BSPs.

This is sarcasm right? You know that the reason for plentiful pickups was because the game monitors your playstyle, if you did poorly it would drop more items, if you played well it'd drop less.
