Hamster

The name "hamster" comes from the German word, hamstern, which means "to hoard." Hamsters were first discovered in the Syrian desert in 1839, but they were not successfully bred and domesticated until 1939.

Today is the 80th anniversary of the Dieppe raid -- considered by some to be the biggest blunder of the Second World War. 1000 Canadian soldiers lost their lives in the fiasco. Here is a rare sketch of a casualty on the beach at Dieppe painted by German war artist Alfred Hierl.

3. ESCAPE

pictured on the cover, this story of allied POWs in a Nazi camp features a German infiltrator - the camp commandant beats and starves POWs, their ghosts come back to release the starving dogs upon the guards. The art is good but the story isn't.
