These late works - a watercolour from his Flower Book, stained glass in Rottingdean & the mosaics at St Paul's, Rome - show time in suspense, a moment of waiting before Mary's acceptance

I have a complex, almost lovehate relationship with this image. Originally I wanted it to look more flat and luminous, more stained glass-like. But it's still one of my favourite things I painted this year, and the gold effects turned out BOMB AS HELL so I'm still very proud
