1841年6月1日、日本人が初めての写真撮影をしたことから1951年に制定された。後に初撮影の日付は1857年9月17日だと判明したが、公益社団法人日本写真協会は6月1日を引き続き採用している。ちなみに初撮影は、薩摩藩士が藩主の島津斉彬を撮影したもの。
