English artist Randolph Caldecott, whose work would impact illustrations for children's books during the 19th century, was born in 1846. Maurice Sendak referred to his work as the "beginning of the modern picture book." The Caldecott Medal was named after him.

If you were going to illustrate a dish running away with a spoon, Randolph Caldecott was your man (1846-86). He died so young, but he helped invent the picture book for children as we know it. I love his historic & rural English scenes. ☺️❤️
