駅弁記念日。
1885年、この日開業した日本鉄道東北本線の宇都宮駅で、日本初の駅弁が発売されました。
　宇都宮市で旅館業を営んでいた白木屋嘉平が、たまたまその旅館に宿泊していた日本鉄道の重役の薦めで販売しました。握り飯2個とたくあんを竹の皮に包んだもので、値段は5銭でした。
