Yeah, I'd prefer to have the lineart separately for precision.
For example in these two drawings, I made the background w/o lineart and with Hole-kun I decided to experiment by adding same color lines to the smoke and debris for definition. This also controls the viewer's focus.

You could always make something with interesting typography. I put some samples below of what I mean. Colors, typeface, and texture to express the general vibe instead of illustrative imagery. And you could use accent icons or images as well but leave the type as the main focus.
