Ryoichi Ikegami - Realistic. You can spot his work a mile away.

Hiroaki Samura - Gritty and brutal, yet there's a beauty to it. Great action, especially in Blade of the Immortal.

Katsuhiro Otomo - Crisp. Love the details.

I think even among English speakers, Dougram had a reputation for gritty realism as the first "proper" Real Robot show after Gundam.

Being a martial arts super robot show instead of a gritty real robot war drama, and was the first Gundam to not be in the Universal Century timeline.
