this was actually finished around half a year ago and it's one of the most demanding illustrations I've done -- one of the best too. the main goal was capturing the sheer darkness of the build; the motifs of the tree, the feathers and blood are all very important here
For some reason, I have a thing (fetish?) for drawing beasts that are way too big. I guess I enjoy capturing that sense of scale. Plus it lends more room for detail.

We went to the Art Institute of Chicago Saturday, and were admiring a large case of these caricatures. Daumier was a master at capturing personality in his art! I hope to do many more sketches based off his little statues. This one has such a fun silhoutte!
