On this day in 1784, Samuel Johnson died aged 75. He was born in Lichfield, but lived most of his life in London - he is buried in Poets' Corner, Westminster Abbey next to his former student, and dear friend, David Garrick.

The mural of The Coronation of St Edward the Confessor for the Painted Chamber in Westminster was thankfully recorded by C.A Stothard in 1819. Created for Henry III's bedchamber in the 1260's. The state bed stood before this image to create a spiritual link to The Confessor.

A humble stone in Beverley Minster is inscribed with 'RESURGAM' - "I shall rise again". That message means so much to me (and is why my email name if firebirdmike). I'm repeatedly rising out of my own ashes! 🙂🙂🙂#tryagain

He is the last monarch to be buried in Westminster Abbey, with the sides of his and his wife's coffins removed at his request so that they could be together in death.

Some parts of the building survived the fire, including Westminster Hall, the Undercroft Chapel and the Cloisters of St Stephen's. These were incorporated into the new Palace of Westminster, designed by Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin, and built between 1839 and 1870. 3/3
