Vas is photosynthetic. They consume solid/liquid food when there's no access to the sun but they most prefer sun exposure for "food."

This issue also raised questions about his helmet. Does the giant dome NOT prevent psionic attacks? Or is it that he's double-baggin' it with TWO layers of psionic protection for his brain? That would make sense. At least when he's anywhere in the New York area.
