oh no, not me supplying more Boss imagery 💀💀💀

wanted to practice the Uekawa Sonic artstyle at the same time, i think i did ok on both fronts!

So essentially, Yuji Uekawa did an Akira Toriyama and made his art more and more angular with each game.
Damn, even in the art department Sonic has it's roots in Dragon Ball lmao

Sonic Team held an internal competition to redesign Sonic for the new era of gaming. Remember that artists like Uekawa are told to draw a certain way when doing art for promotional purposes like this.

Thanks for all the positive reactions to this thread everyone I'm glad to be able to share stuff like this. Here's some Uekawa style art of my own. I've taken a lot of time to analyze his style. It's not all I draw but if you'd like to see more feel free to follow!

A funny thought that came to my mind a while ago Is that artists hate it when they make comparations of their old vs new art and call their old art better.

I sometimes wonder if Uekawa could feel the same way

Now here we are in the late 2010s - 2020s. Sonic is drawn even more angular than before. You can say Uekawas has tried to make Sonic more realistically proportioned.

I think it's time I educate everyone on the differences in Yuji Uekawa's artwork throughout the years. Because everyone seems to lump it all together as "Adventure Style" when that simply isn't the case. THREAD:

So since 2021 I tried to replicate the Uekawa Sonic art and I though I’d share the difference from last year to now! (Older art in the replies)

SONIC JAM!

Illustrations done by the wonderful Yuji Uekawa for Sonic Jam, who would stay as the artist for the franchise after 2 decades!

I had that same thought for a while, especially the one from the Adventure 1-2 era that tries to be graffiti but looks weird in areas like Tails' eyes.
Something about it just looks off.
I sometimes wonder if Uekawa cringes at it considering he never drew Tails like this since.

True. Uekawa is peal Sonic for me and these recent renders are really good. It's just...I still prefer that Adventure model over the current "Pixar" style that Sonic has been rocking.

Sonic has always come off as more anime than cartoon for me.

It's not comparing apples and oranges. It's a reasonable comparison. Uekawa still emotes and shows expressions with his style. She thinks his style still renders the characters (Amy in this case) on model and cute. Additionally, his style is the official "default" and the model.

Uekawa's art is mostly used as stock art, so the characters will never emote much nor tend to look "alive".
Tracy works on a *comic book*, a medium that requires thousands of different poses and expressions. Does anyone complain as much about, for example, Donald Duck ?

Commission work for .
Sonic and Tails doing some movie poses. I was really happy with this request. Commissions will be open until February 15!
