I've seen people theorize that Bowser Jr got his clown car in Bowser Jr's Journey. Iggy rides a clown car at the beginning of the game. But once Iggy disappears, Jr takes it and makes it his own.

I’ve done ancestor designs before cause it’s super fun. Also his ancestors definitely looked like him cause there’s evidence that shows the “Bowser” emblem isn’t actually Bowser’s face as it’s waaaaay older than he is.
