A very small but effective hack to make your portraits look more alive:
Paint subtle saturated colors - I often use reds & golds - in the shadows (B)
instead of having everything the same-ish hue/color as in portrait (A)
(Values are still most important, tough!)
It's annoyingly subtle, but I kind of prefer the cooler tones in TD over the brighter undertones in the fighters.
Sometimes I find myself getting inspired by Kabu's League cards for drawing purposes because of the subtle differences that showed his age despite having practically the same face shape and body.

I'm not sure what your plans are for this, but even in a lit scene I think adding some subtle lighting always looks good and helps the shapes read well (especially from a distance).
Hope you don't mind I did a quick paintover to show what i mean.
@Foervraengd mines more subtle but i do the spiky lower lashes theyre so cute!!
Maybe I should try adding a subtle pattern to the bg behind the flowers next time.
