I'm going to leave the painting to 'rest now' & will look at it fresh another time. I've communicated the background with the bird itself by the blue placement of marks surrounding the little sparrow, giving the bird the tilt of its head as to look at you in wonder.

The painting feels like a mix of reality and abstract (if there is such a thing lol!). I love mark making, creating a form with expressionate brush strokes (& trying not to correct them)

An experiment I tried. I used a scanned negative and drew over the image using a drawing tablet in Adobe Photoshop. The two birds are frequent visitors in the garden - a sparrow and a blue tit 😄🐦

My initial marks, to me are like a blueprint to the final painting.

I've started to feel my way and put the first placement colours/tones down to see if I can capture the essence of the little sparrow.
