Happy Birthday to William Blake #bornonthisday in 1757! 'The Ancient of Days', from our collection, was first painted by Blake in 1794. He repeatedly returned to it, redrawing & repainting it for the rest of his life. This one was coloured by Blake just before his death in 1827.
William Blake was born #OTD 1757. These illustrations by Blake are for the poem “The Grave” by Scottish poet Robert Blair—one of the so-called Graveyard Poets.

Cut short by death. In 1826, William Blake (1757–1827) was commissioned to make a series of etchings for Dante's Divine Comedy. Poverty stricken he "is said to have spent one of the very last shillings he possessed on a pencil to continue sketching." Only 7 images were completed.
