Stanhope Forbes was born in Belfast in 1847 and died in Newlyn in 1947. 'A Fish Sale on a Cornish Beach' debuted in 1885 and was a huge hit, leading other artists to congregate in Newlyn. Forbes became the leader of the 'Newlyn School' art colony on the coast of Cornwall.

First thing I’ve drawn since we’ve moved down to Cornwall. My cat Beryl, dressed as a cowgirl with a rope saying “meowdy” - is it obvious works a bit slow for me at the moment?
