Making an effort to do more quick coloured sketches just to get my ideas down.

I'd describe the first example as being drawn in something a bit like the European "ligne claire" style, exemplified by Tintin comics drawn by Herge and his collaborators.

Those comics are gorgeous, and have no trouble conveying depth to readers.
