That is an issue that people can have; however, one thing that helps is adding highlights around their facial features while maintaining their base skin tone. You can find examples in photography, looking at the contrast between their base skin tone and the bright highlights.

I love all the contrasting colours that depict the different settings, temperature, tone and motifs. From cool watery pastels and earthy reds (Atreides), sickly greens and blacks (Harkonnen) to opulent golds (The Emperor).
