Spent today doing some texture testing for the sword.
I ended up here. I'm not satisfied with it yet. I think I need to push the materials to read a bit better. Currently the blade reads some what soft and I want to fix that.

I duplicate the gray layer and this new layer becomes the flats layer. Lock the transparencies on this layer (that little checker board icon next to "lock:" up top). Start coloring in all your flats on this one layer. Ignore small details for now, focus on coloring "materials".
