Aside from the obvious note that the games play it safe by basing the entire experience of Johto around Kanto nostalgia, these were just AWFUL. No real story to drive the game forward, awful leveling system, and an incredibly short 1st main story
Oblivion has a well deserved reputation of having an awful character creator that made everyone look like vaguely humanoid lumps of play-dough, but dark souls is remarkable in how despite being able to make relatively normal faces it's also capable of far greater horrors.
