I've been finding it really helpful to draw out the basic shapes of facial features over an actual picture and also use "points" to connect where angles are, and then keep redrawing the shapes to the side until I'm comfy enough to draw it on my own.

Look, i know this is hard for everyone, but sometimes the body parts look asymmetrical, features are misplaced, and sometimes limbs are bigger than others, another example being the shoulders being too high, and female anatomy which is a whole other thing.

A lot of cell shading looks really bad, and I think I've at least partly figured it out. 2D puts shadows strategically around the edges of the figure, which accents the main features, and gives depth. Cell shading often cuts halfway across the figure in a really ugly way.

Now THIS is how you design a Goomba's power-up form. It's got all the cute features expected of a cat: fur, ears, paws, a tail, and… Goombas already have the fangs, so that works out nicely. They imitate Cat Mario by hopping up, pouncing at you to attack.
