I've spent a lot of time looking at all the various generations' artwork over the years. Usually you can't see their underside, but when you can, they're almost never lit from underneath. Nidorina's another good example -- no outline, but still has her white underbelly in 2020.

I also, uh, got an important NPC killed: She's scared and won't jump across the gap to the rescue point, so I hopped over in a "See? Easy!" kind of way and... the floor collapsed underneath her and she died, ending the episode early (a change, not a fail) :S
