It's also important to refrence as many artists as possible. Relying on copying only one artist may lead you to adapt their weaknesses aswell. Worst case scenario is you learning bad habits which may be hard to fix later on.
They're great for not just refrence of techniques or colors but also for their subject matter. I like to call it brain food, it's source of inspiration.
When you start to approach art more seriously, you begin to research artists whose techniques and sense of style match with what you like/go for. One of best things I've done was create a refrence folder for artworks like these.

@DuckieOh_ If Mary was a drink, she'd be one like this. I call it a Heart Breaker. It has a fiery flavour, but it only hits you in the back of the throat. The ice and the colour tricks the mind and tastebuds into thinking that it's cold and refreshing, until the punch of the heat hits you.
