The repetetive scales almost always make the dinosaur more boring and more 2D. I find experimenting with different integument makes for something far more interesting

Tried out Substance Painter tonight and it was pretty fun! Didn't feel too hard to pick up and coloring in 3D is just as good for me as in 2D.

Model is the JWE Stegosaurus.
