“You're water. We're the millstone.
You're wind. We're dust blown up into shapes.
You're spirit. We're the opening and closing of our hands. You're the clarity.
We're the language that tries to say it.
You're joy. We're all the different kinds of laughing.”

Since I don't use outlines, I start shading right after some rough color blocking, and proceed from there to define shapes. The left side shows how basic my colors actually are if there is no shading.

3D models and pose dolls are a godsend, saving me a ton of time rough sketching out poses and body shapes. And the ones in Clip Studio even let you shift around the light source for shading

Satoshi Matsuura is a creature and character designer based out of Tokyo, Japan. In some ways, his art style remind me of Hellboy comic artist Mike Mignola‘s simplified forms and shapes.

Fiddling with more 3D functions on Illustrator. It works better on isometric shapes. Flat shapes can also be done but it requires different thinking process.

Thanks. I had a references laid under the sculpt and I just followed the rough shapes. Made extracts or raised areas of the shapes like the mouth where I’d want to put thinned black paint into. It could be smoother though.
