i believe it was this picture, drawn by using a mario powerup prompt (i chose mega mushroom, clearly), that solidified his "kiddie" role, which can be seen pretty much entirely in his expression.

at this point, his design started becoming more "kiddie" just naturally. his personality followed suit with how he addressed his dad going from originally calling him "Larry" to eventually just calling him "Daddy" also seen here and above is his GF (later named Dee Dee)

I think the modern franchise as a whole needs to take time, feeling like adventure games-Unleashed, and not cheap kiddie games as they do now. It needs that indie touch smaller developers have proven can create with more or less time, or a big team with high-quality guaranteed
