I can't really break it down, it's very hacked together; the flakes are a cell fracture + cloth sim (open meshes are a massive pain with cell frac)
There's a shader transition underneath as well to help hide gaps in the fracture

Staff of Karnath was the first Ultimate game I got for the C64. I loved the whole 3D oblique graphic style, and the blank screen with footstep-sounds as you transition between levels. 👍

Added the ability to fall down pits, need to add a landing effect in the next scene. You can also dash over them which is quite fun :)

Also made the transitions a little nicer too.
