In your guys' opinions, what do you think makes something alive?

If, say a robot, can move around, adapt to environment, respond to stimuli, build more robots, but *cannot* breath and doesn't have any biological tissue, is it still alive?
What if the robot has sentience?

The "lego hand" robo claw philosophy is what I use for my OC's story. She lives in a factory and builds a bunch of robots and robot arms with that aesthetic. They were inspired by the robot claws featured in the Rugrats post office episode!
