I use a hardlight gradient to determine that and then shade after. Lighting is my favorite part. I also found a way to make it quick and stylish for comics.

Did some hunting for higher res battlechip chip images and found that the one in American bn1 manual scrubbed out the English text, so the gradient underneath is more clear.

Krita doesn't have a spiral tool but it does have a spiral fill which is good to use as a guide.
