Goku's body was even bigger than Trunks' during the Saiyan and Freeza sagas, but it didn't affect his speed at all, the only one that caused strain was the Kaio-ken because that's how it works

It's pretty inconsistent and Toriyama's use of black makes it appear like it's a one piece(similar to Goku's hair shirt and belt, but it's a two piece just like when he trained with Trunks.
