A5 Honestly, what I do is experiment like heck to see what different effects are possible, then save the good ones in my palette (w/notes!) so they're easy to reproduce.

Clipped the "effect layers" section from the file, here's how it looks right now:

1) Light beaming thru a door into a dark room = screen layer
2) Tints to enhance general atmosphere of each scene = overlay or soft-light layer

A1 Mostly for lighting & color effects.

Here's a strip where I needed a sunrise effect. Flat colors are reused from a base palette, then just add a peach-blue gradient on a soft-light layer.
